Born in Jersey (Channel Islands) in 1964, Gary started playing trumpet at the age of 6. He began playing professionally in local bands from the age of 15. Since then his musical passions have broadened and matured, producing a trumpet soloist with a fine combination of fluidity, emotion and harmonic ideas.
His main influences are Clifford Brown and Kenny Dorham. Gary studied with Ack Van Rooijen, Frans Elsen and John Rocco at the Dutch Royal Conservatory. He now continues his studies with Barry Harris. During his twelve years in the Netherlands he has gigged throughout Europe.
Closer to home, UK gigs have featured Dave Cliff, Spike Wells, Bobby Wellins, Ron Parry, John Burch, Roy Hilton, Allison Neale, John Donaldson, Jez Brown, Dave Chamberlain, Matt Home, Stan Robinson, Dave Whittford to name but a few.
As well as writing, arranging and playing with the Gary Kavanagh Quartet, Gary can also be heard with the Blue Concept Quintet with Allison Neale. Gary released his first solo album in 2003 “Anything but Be Bop” and has recorded a Quintet album "Blue Concept" with Allison due to be released later this year.
